MEA issues advisory for Kailash Mansarovar Yatra pilgrims using private tour operators

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has issued an advisory for Indian citizens planning to undertake the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra through private tour operators, urging pilgrims to exercise caution and make informed decisions before booking their travel.
In the advisory, the MEA said the Government of India does not regulate or endorse private operators organising the pilgrimage. Pilgrims have been advised to verify the credentials of tour companies, carefully examine the terms and conditions of packages, and ensure that all travel documents, permits, insurance coverage and emergency arrangements are in place before departure.
The ministry also cautioned travellers about possible risks associated with high-altitude travel, including health emergencies, weather disruptions and logistical challenges. Pilgrims were urged to undergo medical check-ups and assess their fitness before undertaking the journey to the sacred Himalayan region.
The advisory comes as interest in the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has risen following the resumption of pilgrimage-related travel routes. The MEA emphasised that participants travelling through private arrangements should remain aware of local regulations, visa requirements and safety protocols applicable in the transit and destination areas.
Officials further advised pilgrims to maintain regular contact with family members, carry essential medicines, and keep copies of important documents during the journey.
The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, considered one of the holiest pilgrimages for Hindus, Buddhists, Jains and followers of the Bon faith, involves travel through remote, high-altitude terrain and requires significant physical endurance.
