JP Nadda to launch revamped anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan with new 7x7x7 strategy

Union Health Minister JP Nadda will unveil the operational guidelines for the revamped Anaemia Mukt Bharat (AMB) Abhiyaan on Monday during the 16th meeting of the Central Council of Health and Family Welfare (CCHFW), introducing a comprehensive new strategy to strengthen India's fight against anaemia.

According to the Health Ministry, the revised programme transforms the existing Anaemia Mukt Bharat initiative into Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, broadening its focus beyond iron supplementation to include early screening, therapeutic management, healthy dietary practices, digital monitoring and greater community participation.

A key highlight of the revamped programme is the introduction of the 7x7x7 strategy, replacing the earlier 6x6x6 framework.

Under the revised strategy, low birth weight (LBW) infants aged 0–6 months have been added as the seventh beneficiary group, recognising the need to address anaemia from the earliest stages of life.

The seventh intervention, titled "Eating Right", aims to promote the regular consumption of iron-rich and nutritionally diverse diets, while the seventh institutional mechanism focuses on strengthening monitoring and evaluation through digital tracking systems.

The programme also upgrades its service delivery model from the T3 approach — Test, Treat and Talk — to a T4 approach: Test, Treat, Talk and Track. The enhanced framework is designed to improve haemoglobin testing, ensure timely treatment of iron deficiency anaemia, strengthen follow-up and referrals through systematic beneficiary tracking, and provide better nutrition counselling.

For pregnant and lactating women suffering from severe anaemia or those who do not respond to oral iron therapy, the revised guidelines recommend intravenous iron therapy using Ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM) and Iron Sucrose as key treatment options.

The government also plans to establish an integrated digital ecosystem to monitor anaemia services across all beneficiary groups. Haemoglobin testing records for pregnant women will be linked through the JANANI Portal, while records for children will be maintained through the RBSK and U-WIN portals.

These digital platforms will eventually be integrated into a unified Anaemia Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan Portal, enabling real-time monitoring, data analysis and evidence-based planning to improve programme implementation.

The Health Ministry said the revamped guidelines reaffirm the Centre's commitment to strengthening maternal and child health, improving nutrition outcomes and accelerating efforts to reduce the burden of anaemia across the country.
