Man dies after allegedly jumping into reservoir at DDA park in southeast Delhi

A man died after allegedly jumping into a reservoir at a DDA park in southeast Delhi's New Friends Colony area on Wednesday evening, police said.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been established.

Police said the man took off his T-shirt and shoes before entering the reservoir, which covers around 1.75 acres. A preliminary investigation has indicated that it may have been a case of suicide, they said.

According to police, the man crossed the fencing surrounding the reservoir and entered the water. A security guard at the park attempted to stop him, but the man had already entered the reservoir by the time the guard reached the spot. The beat officer and police were subsequently alerted.

Police and fire department personnel reached the location and began a rescue operation. The man's body was later recovered from the reservoir, police said.

The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) said the reservoir is approximately 10 to 11 feet deep and is enclosed by steel-pole fencing. Warning signs have also been placed at several points to discourage people from entering the water or swimming.

Police are working to establish the deceased man's identity and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.  (with inputs from PTI)
