Five SP workers booked over protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Farrukhabad

Police have registered a case against five Samajwadi Party workers and some unidentified people for allegedly staging a protest against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, raising slogans, burning his effigy and disrupting traffic, officials said on Wednesday.

According to police, the protesters did not have permission from the competent authority to hold the demonstration. They allegedly raised slogans and made objectionable remarks against Kumar before gathering on a main road, leading to traffic congestion and inconvenience for commuters, schoolchildren, women, traders and motorists.

Police said they received information on October 6 that SP workers were marching from beneath the Bholepur overbridge towards Ambedkar Tiraha while raising slogans against the CEC.

Ayush Yadav, Anurag Yadav, Arvind Yadav, Sanju Yadav and Ravi Yadav were among those allegedly found participating in the protest at Ambedkar Tiraha, police said.

The protesters allegedly burned a symbolic effigy of the CEC, resulting in smoke and commotion at the location. Police said the use of fire and inflammable material also created a potential risk to public safety.

A case was registered following a complaint by Sub-Inspector Mulendra Singh against the five named individuals and others under relevant sections, a police official said. Video recordings and photographs from the incident have also been included as evidence.

Fatehgarh Kotwali Inspector Vijay Singh confirmed that a case had been registered over the effigy burning and said the matter was under investigation.  (with inputs from PTI)
