Lovlina’s parents celebrate Asian Games gold, say daughter now eyes Olympic title

The parents of Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain on Friday celebrated their daughter’s Asian Games gold medal, saying she had achieved a goal she had set for herself after winning silver at the previous edition.

Speaking to reporters at their home in Golaghat, Lovlina’s father, Tiken Borgohain, recalled that his daughter had repeatedly told the family she wanted to “change the colour of her medal to gold” after finishing second at the previous Asian Games.

“We are very proud that she achieved her goal through her hard work and brought glory to the nation by winning the gold medal,” he said, while thanking people across Assam for their blessings and prayers.

Lovlina’s mother, Mamoni Borgohain, said the family was overwhelmed with joy, particularly because the gold came on her daughter’s birthday.

“She has been working hard for the last 15 years, and today she has won the gold medal on her birthday. We have no words to describe our happiness,” she said.

Mamoni said Lovlina’s long-term ambition is to win an Olympic gold medal, although her immediate focus will be on the upcoming World Championships.

Lovlina won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics but missed out on a medal at the 2024 Paris Games.

The boxer spoke to her parents over a video call after her victory and told them she was delighted with the result. She is expected to return to New Delhi on October 4 and reach Assam around October 6.

Lovlina also told her parents that she plans to take them on their first international holiday to Vietnam.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also spoke to Lovlina by phone and congratulated her on behalf of the people of the state.

Lovlina defeated China’s Ziyi Bao in the women’s 75kg final to win the Asian Games gold medal.
