LG pitches for Delhi’s own iconic global cultural events

Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Wednesday chaired a meeting to explore ways of showcasing Delhi’s heritage, art, and design traditions.

The LG pitched the development of the capital’s own iconic global cultural events, driven by public-private partnerships. He called for a dedicated focus on strengthening the city’s night economy and directed DDA to explore how its existing spaces can be used for cultural and creative activities.

The meeting was held in the presence of the DDA Vice Chairman and the Secretary of the Tourism Department.

The discussion focused on identifying how Delhi’s cultural and artistic strengths could be more effectively presented to its own citizens and to visitors from India and abroad.

Sandhu emphasised the need to promote nation-building activities, boost the capital’s creative economy, and inculcate a strong sense of civic pride among citizens. He said culture and heritage are not merely matters of preservation but powerful instruments for building a shared civic identity, and that Delhi’s creative economy, spanning art, design, crafts, and performance traditions, holds significant potential for generating livelihoods while strengthening the city’s cultural fabric.

He said inclusive platforms are needed that empower citizens, artists, and youth to contribute meaningfully to preserving and promoting Delhi’s cultural legacy, rather than leaving such efforts confined to Government initiatives alone.
