Viral video of tourist's outburst at Ladakh checkpoint draws flak from Army veterans

A viral video showing a woman tourist arguing with security personnel in Ladakh has drawn sharp criticism from several military veterans.

The undated video shows the woman complaining about the halting of vehicular movement at a checkpoint. She is seen recording herself on her phone, surrounded by a group of other tourists, with security personnel standing guard on the other side of a barricade.

In the clip, she is heard saying, "We are Gen Zs… we will not tolerate this nonsense," and, "Is this what the tourists come to see?" She also makes a remark about army salaries being paid from public taxes. It is not immediately clear what prompted the outburst or exactly when the incident took place, though some reports have linked it to Minamarg.

The video has triggered strong reactions from Army veterans, several of whom pointed to the security sensitivities of Ladakh, part of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir and a militarily sensitive border region where vehicle checks and temporary halts are routine.

Mizoram Governor and former Army chief Gen V K Singh (retd) said in a post on X that India's armed forces stand between the nation and those who seek to harm it. "The Minamarg incident is a stark reminder of the courage, sacrifice and vigilance of our soldiers. Whatever the circumstances, unfairly blaming or disrespecting our soldiers is wrong," he said, adding that criticism should be based on facts and not emotion.

Lt Gen Satish Dua (retd), a counter-terrorism expert who has served as General Officer Commanding of the Army's 15 Corps in Kashmir, referred to the tourist's remark about taxes funding army salaries. "Don't know more details, but this comment is a degradation of the soldiers' sacrifice," he said, noting that army personnel pay taxes too and that Ladakh, being a border area, has genuine security sensitivities.

Lt Gen KJS Dhillon (retd) was the most direct in his response. "My dear lady, soldiers pay their taxes in advance, even before they get their pay. You can go for vacation to such areas because our soldiers are guarding it day and night, even at the cost of their lives," he wrote, adding that her language reflected poorly on her upbringing and urging her to be respectful and law abiding "before asking for entitlement." He ended his post with, "Get well soon."
