Jharkhand rivers swell after rain, dam releases; East Singhbhum issues alert

The East Singhbhum district administration on Monday, August 31, alerted residents of low-lying areas as water levels in the Kharkhai and Swarnarekha rivers continued to rise.

According to a statement issued by Deputy Commissioner Rajeev Ranjan at noon, the Kharkhai River was flowing at 130.44 metres at Adityapur Bridge in Jamshedpur, above its danger level of 129 metres.

The Swarnarekha River was flowing at 120.24 metres at the Mango Bridge site, nearing its red mark of 121.50 metres, the statement said.

The water levels in both rivers were rising due to rainfall and the release of water from dams in neighbouring Odisha, as well as the Chandil Dam and Galudih Barrage in Jharkhand.

As a precautionary measure, the district administration advised residents of low-lying areas to shift to safer locations, if required.

The administration said it was closely monitoring the situation.
