Over 4,000 arrested in J&K drug cases since April this year: DGP

More than 4,000 people involved in the drug trade have been arrested in Jammu and Kashmir since April under the 'Nasha Mukt Abhiyan', Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat said on Thursday.
Speaking at a 'Run for Unity' event, Prabhat said police had registered 3,257 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act since April 11, when Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha launched the campaign in Jammu.
Around 4,000 people have been arrested in these cases, while 170 convictions have been secured, the DGP said. More than 2,500 cases have already been disposed of, he added.
Jammu and Kashmir currently ranks first in the country in terms of property attachments, with 288 properties attached, Prabhat said.
The value of the attached properties stands at around Rs 138 crore, while police have also seized Rs 80 lakh in cash, he said.
Prabhat said 144 accused persons had been booked under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (IT-NDPS), describing it as the highest number recorded by any state or Union territory in the country.
The DGP also said police continued to counter the "nefarious designs" of India's "hostile neighbour" through counter-terror operations.
"September has been a time of immense pride, marked by numerous operational achievements," he said, adding that police had also made progress in crime prevention, criminal detection and maintaining law and order.
