Raja Warring resigns as Punjab Congress chief after Sachin Pilot’s organisational review

Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has resigned as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee amid weeks of internal differences in the state unit, with the party expected to announce his successor soon, party sources said.

The decision followed an organisational assessment conducted by Congress general secretary in-charge of Punjab Sachin Pilot, who took over the state assignment from Bhupesh Baghel on September 5. Pilot held meetings with senior leaders and functionaries before submitting his report to the party high command.

According to party sources, the high command informed Warring that it had decided to replace him, following which he offered his resignation. The party is expected to name a new Punjab Congress chief within the next 24–48 hours.

Former minister Vijay Inder Singla is among the names being considered for the post. Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh and Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa are also in the race, while other names discussed include Rana KP Singh, Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and former chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

The leadership change comes after months of disagreement within the Punjab unit. The friction intensified after the Congress leadership retained Warring as state chief on July 1 while appointing Channi as campaign committee chairperson. A section of leaders opposed Warring’s continuation and sought a change in the state leadership.

The Congress is preparing for the Punjab Assembly elections scheduled for 2027. Warring had headed the state unit since April 2022 and was elected to the Lok Sabha from Ludhiana in 2024.
