India observes one-day state mourning for Qatar’s Former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani

India is observing a one-day state mourning on Monday in honour of Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Amir and former Emir of Qatar, who passed away at the age of 74. The Ministry of External Affairs announced that the mourning is being observed as a mark of respect for the late leader.
As part of the observance, the National Flag is being flown at half-mast on government buildings across the country where it is regularly displayed, and no official entertainment programmes will be held during the day.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Sheikh Hamad, describing him as a visionary leader and a true friend of India who played a significant role in strengthening bilateral ties and transforming Qatar into a prosperous nation. He also conveyed condolences to the Qatari leadership and people.
Sheikh Hamad served as the Emir of Qatar from 1995 to 2013 and is widely credited with modernising the Gulf nation, expanding its global influence and laying the foundation for its economic growth through the development of its energy sector.
