ICC launches return-to-play post-pregnancy guidelines to support female cricketers

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a new “Return to Play Post-Pregnancy Guidelines” framework aimed at supporting female cricketers as they resume professional cricket after childbirth.

The initiative is designed to ensure a safe, structured, and scientifically guided return to competitive sport, taking into account the physical, medical, and psychological needs of athletes during post-pregnancy recovery.

According to the ICC, the guidelines will serve as a comprehensive reference for players, national cricket boards, medical teams, coaches, and support staff to help manage training loads, fitness progression, and overall wellbeing during the comeback phase.

The move comes as women’s cricket continues to grow globally, with more players balancing elite sporting careers alongside motherhood. The ICC said the framework reinforces its commitment to inclusivity and long-term player welfare in the women’s game.

Officials added that the guidelines aim to ensure that pregnancy and motherhood do not become barriers to continuing international cricket careers, while promoting safe return-to-sport pathways based on medical best practices.

The initiative is part of the ICC’s broader efforts to strengthen women’s cricket infrastructure and provide equal professional support systems for female athletes across member nations.
