Andy Burnham confirms bid to succeed Keir Starmer as UK Labour leader and Prime Minister

Former Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has officially confirmed that he will run to succeed Keir Starmer as leader of the UK Labour Party and potentially as the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Burnham announced on social media that he will “put myself forward as part of this process,” signalling his entry into the Labour leadership race following Starmer’s decision to step down.
In his statement on X (formerly Twitter), Burnham thanked Starmer for his leadership and described the transition as an important moment for the party, stressing the need for an orderly and responsible leadership process.
He emphasised that the country requires stability and continued focus on key issues such as economic growth, the cost of living, public services, housing, and opportunities for young people.
Burnham said political change should not distract from the responsibility of improving people’s lives, adding that voters expect seriousness and progress on core national concerns.
Former UK Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who is seen as a potential leadership contender, has already expressed support for Burnham, increasing speculation that he could consolidate backing within the party.
If support continues to build, analysts suggest Burnham could emerge as a leading candidate in the Labour leadership transition.
