Man allegedly throws acid at ex-fiancée, her sister after marriage called off

A man allegedly threw acid at his former fiancée and her sister after their marriage alliance was called off, leaving both women seriously injured, police said on Sunday, August 30.

The accused, identified as Harsh Bhati, a resident of Awas Vikas Colony in Hapur, was caught by the victims' family members while allegedly trying to flee and handed over to police, they said.

According to the victims' father, his daughter's marriage had been fixed with Bhati but the family later called off the alliance after learning that he was allegedly addicted to drugs.

In their complaint, the family alleged that Bhati arrived at the woman's house on Saturday night carrying acid.

When the door was opened, he allegedly threw acid at his former fiancée. Her sister tried to intervene, following which Bhati allegedly threw acid at her too, police said.

The women's screams alerted other family members, who caught Bhati as he attempted to escape, they said.

Personnel from Simbhawali police station reached the spot and took him into custody.

The two sisters were rushed to a hospital, where they are undergoing treatment, police said.

Circle Officer Rahul Yadav said a case has been registered on the basis of the complaint filed by the victims' family and the accused is being questioned.

Further investigation is underway, police said.
