Greek air force jet crashes at aerial show

A Greek Air Force jet crashed at an aerial show north of Athens, sending plumes of black smoke into the air before several thousand spectators on Saturday.

There were no immediate reports of injuries among the attendees following the crash of the twin-seat Phantom F4 jet. Air Force officials said it was not immediately clear whether pilots had managed to eject before the crash.

A water-dropping helicopter hovered over the crash site to contain the fire on the ground.

The incident occurred at Athens Flying Week, an annual air show, at Tanagra Air Force Base.

According to initial information, the aircraft broke into two pieces, and a fire broke out at two separate points. A firefighting helicopter is dropping water in an effort to put out the fire.

Athens Flying Week is being held at Tanagra Air Base over two days, September 5 and 6, with the participation of Greek and foreign military aircraft.
