General NS Raja Subramani takes charge as India’s third Chief of Defence staff

General NS Raja Subramani officially assumed charge as India’s third Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), succeeding General Anil Chauhan, who completed his tenure after more than three years in the role. The change of command was marked by a ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block in New Delhi.

An experienced officer from the Garhwal Rifles, General Subramani previously served as Military Adviser to the National Security Council Secretariat and held several key leadership positions in the Indian Army.

After taking charge, General Subramani emphasized strengthening coordination, integration, and joint operations among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

He highlighted the government’s vision of “JAI” — Jointness, Atma Nirbharta (self-reliance), and Innovation — as the guiding principle for future military reforms. He also stressed the need to accelerate the development and induction of indigenous defence technologies and weapons systems.

As CDS, General Subramani will serve as the principal military adviser to the Defence Minister and oversee efforts to improve tri-services integration and military modernization.

His appointment comes at a crucial time as India continues to push for theatre command reforms, enhanced operational readiness, and greater self-reliance in defence production.
