Four arrested in fake insurance renewal scam

The Cyber Police Station of Delhi’s South West District has busted a fake insurance fraud syndicate that allegedly cheated citizens, particularly senior citizens, by posing as insurance company representatives and demanding money for policy renewals.

Four accused have been arrested in connection with the case. Police have recovered Rs 2 lakh in cash, three keypad mobile phones, seven Android mobile phones, incriminating WhatsApp chats and forged insurance policy documents during the operation from their possession.

The accused have been identified as Sunil Kumar Rawat (38), a resident of Gandhi Nagar; Rahul (28); Sonu (37); and Shivam alias Monu (26). According to the police, the group allegedly cheated a senior citizen of Rs 4 lakh through a fraudulent insurance renewal scheme.

According to police, the syndicate operated in a coordinated manner, using SIM cards obtained under false or unsuspecting identities to impersonate insurance company officials via WhatsApp calls. Victims were told that their insurance policies had expired and required immediate renewal. Once money was transferred into mule bank accounts, forged insurance documents were provided to lend credibility to the fraud. The funds were later withdrawn in cash and distributed among the accused according to their roles.

The case was registered at Cyber Police Station, South West District, through e-FIR No. 235/26 dated May 18, 2026, under Sections 308, 318(4), 319 and 340 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Police said the complainant received a WhatsApp call from a person posing as a representative of a finance company.

The caller allegedly said the insurance policy had expired and that Rs 4 lakh was pending for renewal. Believing the claim to be genuine, the complainant transferred the amount to bank accounts provided by the fraudsters.
