Fortis Noida’s first heart transplant gives a 56-year-old man a new lease on life

Fortis Hospital in Noida has performed the first heart transplant in Noida and Western Uttar Pradesh. The surgery gave 56-year-old Tapas Kumar Dey, who had struggled with chronic heart failure for years, a new chance at life.

Tapas Kumar Dey and his family faced a tough journey, with frequent hospital stays and severe breathlessness making daily life harder. His condition became so serious that medication was no longer enough. Doctors said he had only a 10% chance of survival without a heart transplant. He was put on the waiting list as the medical team worked to keep him stable and searched for a suitable donor.

With help from the Uttar Pradesh and Haryana Police, officials set up green corridors for fast transport. The heart was flown to Hindon Airport in Ghaziabad, and then an ambulance took it the 20 kilometres to Fortis Hospital, Noida, in just 16 minutes. Traffic police, airport staff, and local authorities all worked together to make this possible.

A multidisciplinary team led by Dr Ajay Kaul, Chairman of Cardiac Sciences at Fortis Hospital, Noida, performed the transplant. The doctors removed his damaged heart and replaced it with the donor organ, finishing the main surgery in less than an hour. Because of his history of high blood pressure and kidney problems, he was moved to intensive care for close monitoring and treatment to help his recovery and prevent organ rejection. He is now recovering well. He said that a new heart had become his only chance after his condition had deteriorated significantly. He added that the successful transplant would make specialised heart transplant services more accessible to patients in Noida and Western Uttar Pradesh, reducing the need to travel to other cities for treatment.

For Tapas Kumar Dey, the transplant has marked the beginning of a new chapter after years of For Tapas Kumar Dey, the transplant marks a new beginning after years of living with heart failure.
