FIR filed against Mamata Banerjee over remarks linking Home Ministry to Bangladesh murder case

An FIR has been registered against Mamata Banerjee over alleged provocative remarks made about the Union Home Ministry during a recent protest meeting in Kolkata, police said on Thursday.

The case was lodged at a cyber crime police station in Siliguri following a complaint by advocate Rinki Sen Chatterjee. The complaint relates to comments made by Banerjee during a protest on June 2, where she referred to the murder of a Bangladeshi national and allegedly linked the matter to the Home Ministry and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

According to the complaint, Banerjee's statements could inflame tensions between India and Bangladesh, damage the country's image, and impact the security of Hindus in Bangladesh. The complainant also alleged that the remarks were irresponsible given Banerjee's previous role as Chief Minister.

During the protest meeting in Kolkata, Banerjee referred to the arrest of suspects by the state's Special Task Force and raised questions regarding the circumstances surrounding the case. Her comments have since triggered political controversy and legal action.

Police have confirmed that an FIR has been registered and further investigation into the matter is underway.
