Dust storms hit Delhi, IMD issues red alert for severe thunderstorms and rain

Dust storms and strong winds swept through parts of Delhi this afternoon as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert warning for severe thunderstorms, lightning and rain across the city in the coming hours.
According to the IMD nowcast warning, light to moderate rain accompanied by dust storms is likely at several locations, while severe thunderstorms with lightning and squally winds reaching speeds of 80–100 kmph are expected over most parts of the capital.
The weather office has placed Delhi under a red alert, indicating a high probability of hazardous weather conditions, and has alerted district authorities and disaster management teams to remain prepared and take precautionary measures.
Despite the sudden weather activity, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 26.8°C on Tuesday, while the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 40°C, the IMD said.
Authorities have advised residents to stay cautious, avoid unnecessary travel during intense weather conditions, and secure loose objects as strong winds may continue over the next few hours.
