Derek O’Brien challenges PM Modi should resign if TMC wins Bengal

Amid ongoing polling in the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Derek O'Brien launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, challenging him to resign if the TMC secures victory in the state.

In a video message shared on social media, O’Brien claimed that PM Modi had projected himself as the face of the BJP’s campaign across all 294 seats in West Bengal. “Drop the big talk. Accept this challenge. On May 4, when Mamata Banerjee and TMC win Bengal, resign from the Prime Minister’s post. Got the guts?” he said.

The remarks come as voting is underway in 142 constituencies in the second phase, covering key districts across South Bengal and Kolkata. Over 3.21 crore voters are expected to decide the fate of 1,448 candidates in this phase.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee alleged irregularities during polling, accusing central forces of intimidating party workers and influencing the electoral process. She claimed that several of her party members were detained or harassed and questioned whether free and fair voting could take place under such conditions.

Banerjee also alleged that external observers and security personnel were acting under political influence, further escalating tensions during polling. However, election authorities have maintained that adequate security arrangements are in place to ensure peaceful voting.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which is seeking to expand its presence in the state, has conducted an extensive campaign, with PM Modi holding multiple rallies ahead of the elections.

The second phase is being closely watched as it covers several TMC strongholds, making it a crucial test for both the ruling party and the opposition.

Counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections, along with other states, is scheduled for May 4.
