Delhi Police detain 4 for molesting, assaulting women in Nehru Place

In a swift action, the Delhi Police has detained four accused in connection with the alleged molestation and assault of two women near a club in Nehru Place in the early hours of May 10. Out of the two victims, one woman was from Assam, while the other was from Bihar.

The police also said that preliminary investigation had found no evidence so far of any racial slur targeting the Northeastern woman, even though one of the women had earlier alleged racist abuse during the altercation.

According to police, the incident began early morning when four men riding on two motorcycles allegedly verbally harassed the two women while passing by them. The women allegedly responded verbally, following which they moved to a nearby tea stall. Police said the accused returned to the tea shop within a few minutes, leading to another verbal altercation that escalated into a quarrel. Some bystanders later intervened and helped the women.

A PCR call regarding women in distress was received at Kalkaji police station around 7 am, after which local police teams rushed to the spot near a tea stall in Nehru Place. “Preliminary inquiry revealed that the victims were subjected to derogatory remarks and abuses which led to a physical altercation amongst the victims and accused,” South-East DCP Hemant Tiwari had earlier said in a press note.

The women alleged that two men began verbally harassing them while they were having tea outside a hotel, after which several others joined in. One of the women further alleged that she was molested, her clothes were torn, and she was attacked with a bamboo stick while trying to leave the area.

A case has been registered at Kalkaji police station under Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 74 (assault or criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 126(2) (wrongful restraint), 351(2) (criminal intimidation), 78 (stalking) and 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The accused allegedly blocked their path and threatened them with consequences if they disclosed the incident. The police said both women were taken to AIIMS for medical examination. CCTV footage from nearby areas was scanned and several witnesses were identified and questioned during the investigation.

Police said the four detained accused have been identified as Md Fahad, Md Savej, Md Arif, and Aman alias Mohd Faheem alias Kala.
