Delhi police constable suspended for filming Instagram reels with firearms during BRICS summit security duty

Delhi Police has suspended constable Deepak Bangar, who was deployed for rooftop sniper duty during the 18th BRICS Summit, after he posted Instagram reels showing himself handling firearms and revealing sensitive security details while on assignment.

Bangar, posted with the Foreigners Cell in the Northwest district, was assigned to a five-star hotel in Central Delhi housing foreign delegates during the summit, held at Bharat Mandapam from September 12 to 13 and attended by leaders including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. He was deployed as part of an overwatch team on the hotel terrace, tasked with sniper and spotter duties to protect VVIPs at the venue.

In one video, Bangar appeared in civilian clothes wearing his BRICS Summit 2026 identity card while handling a service pistol, with the hotel's surroundings visible in the frame. In another, he was seen peering through the scope of a sniper rifle from the terrace, with nearby buildings and vantage points visible in the background. A third clip reportedly showed other security personnel and equipment at the site, including a colleague using binoculars. The videos, posted from Bangar's Instagram account, went viral before the account was blocked.

The footage drew sharp criticism online, with users pointing out that it exposed the exact location, personnel and equipment deployed for the operation — precisely the kind of details security details are meant to keep confidential. Some social media users claimed to have identified the location from the videos and called for immediate action.

Delhi Police removed Bangar from BRICS duty, suspended him with immediate effect, and sent him back to his home district. A senior officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the department had taken serious note of the disciplinary lapse and ordered a departmental inquiry to establish the circumstances under which the videos were recorded and uploaded, adding that further disciplinary proceedings would follow as per rules.
