Delhi Metro stations to get collection boxes for old clothes

The Delhi Government and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation are set to launch a new recycling initiative under which special collection boxes for old clothes will be installed at 10 major Metro stations across the Capital.

The initiative, announced under the guidance of Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, aims to promote environmental conservation and reduce textile waste through recycling and reuse. Garments deposited by commuters will be converted into useful products through a structured recycling and upcycling process.

Officials said the project is part of the government’s broader push for sustainable development and community participation in environmental campaigns. Chief Minister said that textile waste has become a growing environmental concern, and the new initiative aims to ensure the scientific disposal and recycling of discarded clothing.

“The Delhi Government is continuously working towards building a clean and environmentally responsible capital. This initiative will help reduce waste and encourage sustainable practices among citizens,” the Chief Minister said.

According to officials, collection boxes will be placed at Shahdara, Mohan Estate, Rohini West, Lajpat Nagar, Malviya Nagar, Mayur Vihar Phase I, Hauz Khas, Punjabi Bagh West, Dwarka, and Shalimar Bagh Metro stations.

These stations were selected by the DMRC Operations Department after assessing passenger movement and accessibility. Security teams also reviewed the proposed locations before approval. The collected garments will be sorted into different categories and supplied to non-governmental organisations and self-help groups for reuse and upcycling.

Officials said several useful products, including bags, rugs, and other fabric items, will be created from the discarded clothes.

Garments that cannot be reused directly will be sent to recycling units. There, they will be processed into recycled yarn, fibre, and non-woven felt products to minimise waste generation. The Delhi Government said the initiative is designed not only to promote recycling but also to encourage public participation in environmental protection efforts.

Officials said dedicated spaces will also be created at selected Metro stations where products made from recycled clothes can be displayed and sold. This is expected to provide support to self-help groups and local organisations involved in upcycling activities.
