Delhi govt to set up collection centres for damaged idols: CM Rekha Gupta

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has announced that the government will soon set up dedicated collection centres across the capital for the respectful disposal of damaged idols.

Speaking on the issue, the Chief Minister said that idols worshipped in homes are often discarded when they become damaged, sometimes being left under trees, in rivers, or in public spaces such as roadsides and parks. She called the practice inappropriate and stressed the need for a more respectful and environmentally responsible alternative.

Under the proposed initiative, collection centres will be established at multiple locations where citizens can deposit broken or damaged idols. These idols will then be processed and recycled in an environmentally safe manner.

The Delhi government said the move aims to combine cultural sensitivity with ecological responsibility, ensuring that religious sentiments are respected while also reducing pollution caused by improper disposal.

Officials will soon finalise the locations and operational framework for these centres as part of a broader waste management and environmental protection effort in the national capital.
