CPI(M) attacking Rahul Gandhi due to its own political decline, says K.C. Venugopal

Congress leader K.C. Venugopal has strongly criticized the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], accusing it of targeting Rahul Gandhi to divert attention from its own political setbacks and declining electoral performance.
The remarks come amid growing tensions between the Congress and the Left parties within the opposition camp.
In a statement, Venugopal alleged that the CPI(M)'s repeated attacks on Rahul Gandhi reflect "political insecurity" and a failure to honestly assess the reasons behind its recent electoral defeats.
He argued that instead of introspecting on its weakening political position, particularly in Kerala, the party is attempting to blame Gandhi for its problems.
The Congress leader compared the CPI(M)'s criticism of Gandhi to "breaking a mirror because one does not like their reflection," suggesting that the Left party is avoiding accountability for its own challenges.
He also pointed out that several Left leaders have benefited from support provided by Congress and its allies in different parts of the country.
The latest exchange follows recent disagreements between Congress and CPI(M) leaders over comments made during opposition alliance discussions.
Despite being part of the broader anti-BJP political space, both parties continue to clash, especially in Kerala, where they remain major rivals.
Venugopal maintained that Congress remains focused on strengthening democracy and opposing the BJP at the national level, while warning that continued internal opposition attacks could further weaken the broader opposition movement.
