India's Russian Oil imports rise in May as refiners increase purchases

India's imports of Russian crude oil increased significantly in May 2026 as domestic refiners stepped up purchases from Moscow, reinforcing Russia's position as one of India's key energy suppliers.

According to a report by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA), India remained the world's second-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels during the month. Russian hydrocarbon imports were estimated at around €5.8 billion (approximately $6.7 billion).

Crude oil accounted for the majority of these imports, making up nearly 83% of the total value. CREA reported that India's overall crude oil imports rose by about 8% in May compared to April, while imports from Russia jumped by 21% during the same period. State-run refiners also increased purchases after resuming imports earlier this year.

The report noted that refineries in Mangaluru and Visakhapatnam, which had temporarily halted Russian crude purchases in late 2025, continued expanding imports after restarting procurement in March. Russian oil deliveries to these facilities saw notable month-on-month growth in May.

The latest figures highlight India's continued reliance on discounted Russian crude despite efforts to diversify energy supplies from the Middle East, Africa, and the United States.

Analysts say price advantages and energy security considerations remain key factors behind India's purchasing decisions.
