CM orders crackdown on illegal hotels after fire tragedy
Days after the deadly Malviya Nagar fire tragedy shook the Capital, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered a sweeping crackdown on illegal hotels, guest houses, and unauthorised constructions across the city, while warning that officials and property owners found responsible for safety violations will face strict action.
The Chief Minister has convened a high-level meeting on Friday with senior officials from multiple departments to review lapses linked to the fire incident and prepare a coordinated action plan aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future.
Officials from Delhi Police, the Revenue Department, Municipal Corporation of Delhi, New Delhi Municipal Council, Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Fire Service, Delhi Jal Board, and other agencies will attend the meeting at the Delhi Secretariat.
The government has made it clear that no one found guilty in connection with the Malviya Nagar fire incident will be spared. According to officials, the administration plans to launch a strict enforcement drive against illegal guest houses, hotels operating without permission, and buildings violating fire safety norms and construction rules.
The Chief Minister said public safety could not be compromised and stressed that Delhi required a stronger and more accountable monitoring system to prevent such incidents. “To make Delhi safe, every aspect related to safety standards, monitoring, and accountability must be addressed comprehensively,” the Chief Minister said.
The government’s response comes amid growing scrutiny over illegal commercial establishments and alleged violations of fire safety regulations in several parts of the city.
The Malviya Nagar fire tragedy has triggered fresh concerns about unauthorised construction, emergency preparedness, and lax enforcement of building regulations.
According to the Chief Minister’s Office, the Chief Minister is personally reviewing information from various departments regarding the incident and has sought details about administrative failures and possible negligence.
She said accountability would be fixed not only for property owners but also for officials whose negligence or inaction may have contributed to the situation.
The Chief Minister also indicated that corruption and administrative lapses within certain departments had allowed unsafe practices to continue unchecked for years. She said strict and effective measures were now necessary to stop the recurrence of such incidents and to prevent future loss of life and property.
Officials familiar with the proposed plan said the government is likely to intensify inspections of commercial establishments, particularly guest houses and hotels operating in densely populated areas. Fire safety systems, emergency exits, building permissions, and compliance with civic regulations are expected to come under detailed scrutiny. The Delhi Government is also expected to prepare a broader safety framework involving coordination between civic agencies, police, fire services, and urban development authorities.
The Chief Minister said the administration was committed to implementing stricter rules to tackle illegal construction and unsafe commercial activity.
She stated that institutions violating safety norms or operating without proper permissions would face action.
The proposed campaign is likely to include enforcement measures against unauthorised structures and commercial establishments that fail to comply with prescribed safety standards. The Chief Minister’s Office said the objective was not only to investigate the Malviya Nagar incident but also to strengthen Delhi’s overall urban safety mechanism.
Officials said the upcoming review meeting would focus on identifying gaps in enforcement, improving coordination between departments, and developing a long-term strategy for fire prevention and emergency response.
The Malviya Nagar tragedy has once again highlighted concerns over overcrowded buildings, illegal modifications, and poor compliance with fire safety regulations in the national capital.
The government now appears set to launch one of its strongest enforcement drives in recent years against unauthorised commercial properties and safety violations.
