CBSE allows class 7-9 Students to continue foreign language combination till class 10: Report

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is set to provide relief to students currently studying in Classes 7, 8 and 9 by allowing them to continue their existing foreign language combinations until they complete Class 10, despite the rollout of the new three-language policy.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said students who are already studying two foreign languages will not be required to switch languages midway through their schooling. The clarification comes after concerns from parents and schools over a recent CBSE circular implementing the three-language formula from July 2026.
The minister acknowledged that the earlier communication had created confusion and said the transition would be implemented gradually. However, CBSE is yet to issue a formal amended notification, which is expected after discussions in the board's governing council.
Under the revised policy, students entering Class 6 will be required to study three languages, with at least two being Indian languages, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The relaxation is intended only for students already enrolled under the existing language scheme.
The clarification is expected to ease anxiety among students and parents who feared they would have to discontinue foreign language studies midway through secondary education.
