BWSSB bans use of drinking water for swimming pools, imposes Rs 5,000 fine for violations

The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) has announced a series of strict water conservation measures, including a ban on using drinking water to fill swimming pools, amid concerns over a possible rainfall deficit caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

The new rules also prohibit the use of potable water for washing vehicles, watering gardens, cleaning roads and footpaths, and construction activities. Authorities have advised residents and establishments to use treated water or other alternative sources for these non-essential purposes.

To further reduce water consumption, BWSSB has made it mandatory for residential buildings, apartments, commercial establishments, government offices, hotels and industries to install flow restrictors (aerators), which can reduce water usage by 30–50% without affecting water flow.

The move is aimed at ensuring long-term drinking water security for Bengaluru as the city prepares for possible monsoon shortfalls. Officials warned that violators will face a fine of ₹5,000, with repeat offences attracting an additional ₹500 per day.

BWSSB may also reduce water supply by up to 50% and initiate legal action under the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Act, 1964. The Board has appealed to citizens to cooperate in conserving water and use potable water responsibly.
