Brahmin Front slams Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, calls his being a Brahmin 'unfortunate for us'

The Akhil Bharat Brahmin Front, Assam State Committee, criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday, October 6, alleging he has done little for the Brahmin community despite belonging to it himself.

Addressing a press conference at the Guwahati Press Club, representatives of the organisation said it was "unfortunate" that the Chief Minister belonged to the Brahmin community but did not extend adequate support to it. The group alleged that Sarma does not attend meetings or programmes organised by the Brahmin community and has not taken steps to form a Brahmin Development Council in Assam.

The press conference also raised objections to UGC regulations and the Assam Land and Revenue Regulation (Amendment) Bill, 2026. On the land bill, the Front expressed concern that its provisions could affect indigenous people, tribal communities and ordinary farmers, potentially pushing them out of their land or restricting their access to it. The organisation alleged some provisions could make it easier for wealthy individuals and large companies to acquire land, putting local livelihoods at risk, and urged the government not to proceed with such decisions without first consulting the public and farmers' organisations.

On higher education, the Front opposed what it called increasing control by the University Grants Commission, saying it could erode the autonomy of Assam's state universities to make decisions suited to local needs. It also called for measures to prevent the commercialisation of education and rising fees, saying meritorious students from poor backgrounds should not be denied access to higher education, and demanded that local languages, indigenous culture and reservation policies be properly protected in teacher recruitment and in university and school curricula.
