BJP legislature party meeting begins in Kolkata to elect West Bengal Chief Minister

The BJP legislature party meeting began in Kolkata on Friday to elect the party’s leader and the next Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The meeting is being held in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and attended by newly elected BJP MLAs, central observers and senior state leaders.

According to party sources, Suvendu Adhikari remains the frontrunner for the Chief Minister’s post after emerging as the face of BJP’s campaign in the state Assembly elections.

Adhikari secured victories from both the Nandigram constituency and Bhabanipur, the political stronghold of former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

The BJP’s victory in the Assembly polls ended the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year rule in the state and paved the way for the party’s first government in West Bengal.

The swearing-in ceremony of the new BJP government is scheduled to be held at Brigade Parade Ground in Kolkata on May 9.
