Bhopal Dowry Death Case: Mother-in-Law makes claims on Marijuana and Mental Health

The investigation into the alleged dowry death of a 33-year-old woman, Twisha Sharma in Bhopal has taken a new turn after the mother-in-law made serious counter-allegations regarding her mental health and medical history.
The deceased, originally from Noida, was found dead in what police are treating as a dowry death and abetment case. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is currently probing the matter under relevant sections of law.
According to the mother-in-law, a retired judge, the woman was undergoing psychiatric treatment and had been diagnosed with schizophrenia-related symptoms. She also claimed that the woman had undergone an abortion shortly before her death and had expressed a desire to reverse the procedure.
The mother-in-law further alleged that the woman had admitted to consuming marijuana during her pregnancy, and claimed she was under medication and experiencing withdrawal-like symptoms. She stated that counselling sessions had also taken place during this period.
However, the deceased’s family has strongly rejected these claims and accused the in-laws of dowry harassment, mental torture, and physical abuse after marriage. They allege that the woman repeatedly expressed distress, saying she felt “trapped” and emotionally suffocated in her marital home.
WhatsApp messages cited by the family suggest she had complained about being misunderstood and accused of drug use. The family has also demanded an independent post-mortem at AIIMS Delhi, alleging inconsistencies in the initial investigation.
While the post-mortem report indicates suicide, police continue to investigate the case under dowry death and abetment charges. The husband remains absconding, while the mother-in-law has been granted anticipatory bail.
Authorities say the SIT probe is ongoing, and further forensic and legal scrutiny will determine the final direction of the case.
