Assam CM to lay foundation stone for ISRO advanced radar research centre

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is scheduled to lay the foundation stone of ISRO's Advanced Radar Research Centre at Chandrapur on Monday, describing the project as a "landmark moment" for Assam.

In a social media post, Sarma said he was deeply satisfied that the state was set to become home to such cutting-edge national infrastructure.

The facility is being established under Project NETRA and is expected to enhance India's ability to track objects in space and safeguard the country's vital space assets, he said.

Sarma noted that Assam was once considered to be away from India's major technology centres, and said it was satisfying to see the state now becoming home to such advanced national infrastructure.

He also expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for considering Assam for the strategic project.

The Assam government has allocated 200 bighas of land, which is around 6.61 acres, for the facility.

The project is intended to establish a surveillance and tracking centre that will monitor objects in space and track orbital debris. It will also strengthen India's Space Situational Awareness (SSA) capabilities.  (with inputs from PTI)
