Amit Shah arrives in Kolkata to finalise BJP Chief Minister face for West Bengal

Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived in Kolkata on Wednesday to hold crucial meetings with newly elected BJP legislators as the party moves closer to naming its Chief Ministerial candidate in West Bengal.

The visit comes ahead of the oath-taking ceremony of the new BJP government, scheduled to take place on May 9 at Brigade Parade Ground.

According to party sources, the final decision on the Chief Minister is expected soon, with senior BJP leaders, including Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, being discussed as possible contenders.

The BJP’s leadership is expected to hold consultations with MLAs and state leaders before officially announcing the legislative party leader.

The developments come amid heightened political activity in the state following the BJP’s sweeping victory in the assembly elections and reports of post-poll tensions in several districts.

BJP MP Saumitra Khan said that a “people’s leader” would be chosen as the next Chief Minister, describing the moment as a major political turning point for West Bengal.

Security arrangements across Kolkata have also been tightened in view of high-level political meetings and preparations for the government formation ceremony.

The BJP secured a decisive mandate in the recent assembly polls, ending the 15-year rule of the Trinamool Congress in the state.
