Massive fire at Nagpur scrap godown destroys over 500 vehicles

A massive fire broke out at a scrap godown in the Khairi Gram Panchayat area under Kamptee tehsil in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district on Thursday morning, destroying more than 500 scrap vehicles and causing losses estimated to be worth crores of rupees.
According to officials, the fire erupted around 9 am and spread rapidly across the large scrap storage facility within minutes. The flames quickly engulfed stacks of four-wheeler scrap vehicles parked inside the premises.
Huge plumes of smoke were seen rising from the site and were visible from several kilometres away. Residents in nearby areas reported hearing repeated bursting sounds as vehicles caught fire one after another, triggering panic in the locality.
Preliminary reports suggest that the scrap godown belongs to Nizam Ansari, a resident of Jafar Nagar in Nagpur.
Locals alerted police and fire department officials immediately after spotting smoke from the premises.
Following the alert, multiple fire tenders from the Kamptee Municipal Council, Yerkheda Nagar Panchayat and the Nagpur Municipal Corporation rushed to the spot to control the blaze.
Firefighters battled the flames for several hours and managed to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby areas.
Officials said over 500 scrap vehicles parked inside the godown were completely gutted in the fire, resulting in major financial losses.
While the exact cause of the incident remains unknown, authorities suspect that highly flammable materials stored in the scrap yard may have accelerated the spread of the fire.
Police and fire department teams have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the blaze. The administration is also assessing the extent of the damage caused by the incident.
No casualties or injuries have been reported so far.
