Abhishek Porel arrested over marriage promise complaint

The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday adjourned till September 14 hearing of a petition by a woman accusing Bengal cricketer Abhishek Porel of sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage, following a prayer by the West Bengal Government for taking steps post his arrest.

Porel was arrested on Monday night in connection with the complaint by the medical student. A report was placed before the court of Justice Saugata Bhattacharyya, and an adjournment was sought by the State to enable the police authorities to take forward the investigation.

Another accused in the case, a friend of Porel, is yet to be apprehended.

Adjourning the hearing, Justice Bhattacharyya directed that the matter be listed for hearing again on September 14.

Porel, who has played for Delhi Capitals in the IPL, was arrested by the police in Hooghly district following a complaint by the medical student, alleging he had sexual relations with her on the promise of marriage, an official said.

The district court at Chinsurah remanded Porel to three-day police custody, denying his bail plea.

The high court had directed the police to arrest the cricketer in connection with the case, and ordered the seizure of his electronic devices to prevent the dissemination of photographs of the complainant.
