Rahul objects to CBI chief selection
Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday issued a dissent during the meeting of the high-powered committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to select the next CBI director, alleging that the process had been reduced to a formality and lacked transparency. In a two-page note submitted to the Prime Minister, Gandhi said he could not be a "rubber stamp" in what he described as a biased exercise. He alleged that the Government had denied him access to key documents, including self-appraisal and 360-degree evaluation reports of eligible candidates, forcing him to review extensive records without adequate information. Gandhi further accused the government of misusing the agency to target Opposition leaders, journalists, and critics, arguing that his inclusion in the selection panel was meant to ensure institutional accountability.
He also recalled previous objections and letters on the issue, saying he had received no response. The meeting, held at the Prime Minister's residence, included Chief Justice of India Surya Kant as the other member of the panel. Sources said discussions lasted over an hour, with several senior IPS officers under consideration for the post, as incumbent CBI Director Praveen Sood's tenure ends on May 24. The government has not issued an official statement on the proceedings, and the final decision is expected shortly.
