Mother thanks PM Modi for forgiving her daughter

In a heartfelt gesture amid a raging controversy, the mother of Ruchika Singh, the young woman accused of making abusive remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has publicly thanked him for his decision to forgive her daughter and other youngsters involved.

Noida Police filed a Zero FIR against her under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for intentional insult, public mischief, and defamation.

The case was later moved to Delhi Police since the incident happened in the capital. There is also confusion about her age, as the FIR lists her as 25, but she claimed to be 15 in her apology. The abusive language directed at him and his late mother was described as a “cultural shock” and an “ugly spectacle.” Calling the protesters “misguided children” or “mischievous youngsters,” he emphasised that mistakes often occur at a young age and present an opportunity for correction. “I want to forgive them. Society should also accept my decision,” he said, arguing that dragging them through courts would not solve deeper societal issues. He compared it to the tongue being bitten by teeth: both belong to us, so one does not punish the other.

Ruchika Singh posted an apology video, folding her hands as she spoke. She explained that she went to Connaught Place with a friend and was influenced by others, including some YouTubers, to speak out, which led her to use vulgar language.

“What I did is unforgivable... This is my first and last mistake,” she said, apologising to the whole country and saying she did not post the video herself. Later, she thanked the Prime Minister and called his forgiveness the “biggest birthday gift.”

Her mother also expressed her thanks, saying, “The Prime Minister has forgiven her. I thank him. My appeal is that children of a young age should be kept away from social media.”
