Massive fire at match factory near Kazhugumalai destroys machinery and raw materials worth ₹1 crore

A major fire broke out at a match manufacturing unit near Kazhugumalai in Tamil Nadu’s Thoothukudi district, causing extensive damage to machinery and raw materials valued at over Rs 1 crore. The incident occurred at a factory located along the Kayathar Road near Koolaithevanpatti village.
According to police officials, the factory is owned by a local entrepreneur and was operating when the blaze suddenly erupted. The fire rapidly spread through the premises, engulfing production equipment and stored materials before emergency responders could contain it.
Fire and rescue personnel rushed to the site and launched an intensive firefighting operation to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby structures. While no casualties were reported, the fire caused significant financial losses to the factory owner.
Authorities have begun an investigation to determine the exact cause of the fire. Preliminary assessments indicate that machinery and production materials suffered extensive damage, with losses estimated at more than Rs 1 crore.
The incident has once again highlighted safety concerns in Tamil Nadu’s match manufacturing sector, where fire-related accidents remain a recurring challenge.
