Over 200 killed, more than 700 injured
India has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in the Gulf region following the reported joint military strikes by the United States and Israel on Iran, as the wider Middle East faces renewed instability.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday held separate phone conversations with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and his Israeli counterpart Gideon Sa’ar as the Middle East reeled under massive tension following a joint US-Israel military offensive against Iran. Jaishankar conveyed to Araghchi India’s deep concern over the developments in Iran and the region. “Had a telecom with Iranian FM Seyed Abbas Araghchi on Saturday evening. Shared India’s deep concern at the recent developments in Iran and the region,” Jaishankar said on social media.
“India is deeply concerned at the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region,” the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement.
Urging all parties to step back from confrontation, the Government stressed the importance of safeguarding civilian lives and infrastructure. “We urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritise the safety of civilians,” the statement added.
India underscored that dialogue and diplomacy remain the only viable pathways to defuse tensions. “Dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and address underlying issues. Sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected,” it said.
The statement reflects India’s consistent position on conflicts in West Asia, where it has balanced strategic partnerships with multiple stakeholders while advocating peaceful resolution of disputes. The region remains critical to India’s energy security, trade routes, and the safety of millions of Indian expatriates. Advisories Issued for Indian NationalsAmid growing uncertainty, Indian missions across the region have issued detailed advisories to ensure the safety of citizens.
Iran: In a post on X, the Indian Embassy in Tehran advised all Indian nationals in Iran to exercise utmost caution, avoid unnecessary movements, and remain indoors as far as possible. Citizens have been urged to closely monitor developments and await further guidance from the mission. Emergency contact numbers have also been circulated for immediate assistance.
Israel:The Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv has urged Indian nationals to “exercise utmost caution and remain vigilant at all times.” Citizens have been advised to strictly follow safety instructions issued by Israeli authorities, including guidelines from the Home Front Command. Indians in Israel have been asked to stay close to designated shelters, identify protected spaces near their homes or workplaces, and avoid non-essential travel until further notice. They have also been urged to monitor local news, official announcements, and emergency alerts.
United Arab Emirates:The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi has advised Indian nationals in the United Arab Emirates to avoid unnecessary travel, remain vigilant, and follow safety guidelines issued by UAE authorities. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai are functioning normally and have shared emergency contact numbers for assistance.
Saudi Arabia:The Embassy of India in Riyadh has advised Indian nationals residing in the Saudi Arabia to remain vigilant and strictly adhere to safety guidelines in force. Citizens have been urged to follow advisories issued by local authorities. The Embassy in Riyadh and the Consulate in Jeddah continue to function normally and will provide updates as required.
Officials said India is closely monitoring the evolving situation and remains prepared to take necessary steps to safeguard its citizens and national interests. The latest flare-up threatens to widen the conflict footprint across the Gulf, raising fears of broader regional instability.
