IMD issues yellow alert for 9 districts in Kerala due to heavy rainfall forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for nine districts in Kerala as the state is expected to receive widespread rainfall, thunderstorms and gusty winds over the next few days.
According to the weather department, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places across several districts due to strengthening monsoon activity and favourable weather conditions over the Arabian Sea. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious, especially in low-lying and hilly areas that are vulnerable to waterlogging and landslides.
The yellow alert has been issued for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad and Kannur districts. The IMD has warned that thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds may also occur in several parts of the state.
Weather officials have forecast continued rainfall activity across Kerala over the coming days as the southwest monsoon advances further towards the region. The department has also cautioned fishermen against venturing into the sea along parts of the Kerala coast due to rough weather and strong winds.
State disaster management authorities have urged the public to follow weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel during intense rainfall, and remain alert for possible flooding, fallen trees, power disruptions and landslide risks in vulnerable areas.
The alert comes as schools across Kerala reopen after the vacation period, prompting authorities to closely monitor weather conditions and preparedness measures across affected districts.
