Future wars will be joint and theatre-oriented: Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi

Outgoing Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi on Tuesday said that future conflicts will be increasingly joint, integrated and theatre-oriented, stressing that India's armed forces must operate with greater coordination across the Army, Navy and Air Force to meet evolving security challenges.
Speaking during his ceremonial farewell at South Block in New Delhi, General Dwivedi said the direction for the armed forces is clear: "to see together, take decisions together and take actions together." He noted that modern warfare demands seamless coordination among the three services rather than independent operations.
Reflecting on his tenure, General Dwivedi said he was leaving office with a deep sense of gratitude, pride and satisfaction after serving in the Indian Army for over four decades. He described his journey from Sainik School to becoming the 30th Chief of the Army Staff as the "greatest privilege" of his life.
The outgoing Army Chief highlighted that synergy among the three services had strengthened during his tenure, citing improved integration and a shared operational approach. He also pointed to military operations along the northern and western borders as examples of enhanced jointness in action.
General Dwivedi also expressed confidence in his successor, General Dhiraj Seth, saying the Indian Army would continue to uphold its traditions of professionalism and operational excellence under the new leadership. After the farewell ceremony, he laid a wreath at the National War Memorial to pay tribute to fallen soldiers.
