Food safety raids in Cyberabad uncover cockroach infestations, stale food and hygiene violations

Food safety inspections conducted across several eateries in Hyderabad's Cyberabad region have uncovered serious hygiene and food safety violations, including cockroach infestations, stale food, expired ingredients, pest infestations and poor storage practices. The raids were carried out by the Cyberabad Municipal Corporation (CMC) as part of its ongoing drive to improve food safety standards.
Inspections at multiple restaurants and food establishments in areas such as Kukatpally, Hitec City, Gachibowli, Kothaguda and Madinaguda revealed alarming lapses. Officials found heavy cockroach infestations in kitchens, freezers and storage areas, grain pests in food stocks, mould growth on vegetables, lizard droppings near food storage zones, and expired food products and spices.
At some establishments, stale food items including meat, rice, noodles and chicken preparations were found stored in freezers. Inspectors also flagged issues such as open drains, food waste accumulation, improper butchering practices, inadequate housekeeping, unlabelled food items and the absence of mandatory health and water-testing records.
Authorities discarded expired and unsafe food products on the spot and directed managements to undertake deep cleaning, pest control measures and corrective action. The inspections are part of a broader initiative to strengthen hygiene compliance and introduce food safety ratings for eateries across Cyberabad.
The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over food safety standards in Hyderabad, where adoption of hygiene ratings among food establishments remains low.
