5 drowned, 1 missing after boat capsizes in Yamuna river in UP’s Hamirpur

5 people, including 4 children, drowned and 1 boy went missing after a boat capsized in the Yamuna river in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district, police said.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening near Kutubpur Patiya hamlet under Bhauli gram panchayat in the Kurara police station area when a group of villagers was returning from a river island.
According to officials, nine passengers apart from the boatman were travelling in the boat when it reportedly lost balance in the middle of the river and overturned around 7 pm.
Boatman Dheeru managed to rescue three people identified as Vishnu, Rinku and Parul, while others were swept away in the river.
Police said five bodies, including those of four children, were later recovered during rescue operations. An 11-year-old boy remains missing and search efforts are continuing.
District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal said teams from the National Disaster Response Force and the State Disaster Response Force have been deployed to trace the missing child.
Local police and administrative officials reached the spot soon after the incident and launched rescue operations with the help of villagers.
The tragedy has once again raised concerns over boat safety and overcrowding on rivers in Uttar Pradesh, especially in rural areas where boats are frequently used for transportation.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
