Election Commission begins SIR drive in 5 states

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has launched the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in five states—Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Jharkhand and Meghalaya—to update and verify voter records ahead of future elections. As part of the exercise, Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will conduct door-to-door verification of registered voters.
According to the ECI, if a house is found locked, the BLO will make repeat visits. In some cases, officials may leave an enumeration form or a notice requesting the resident to complete the verification later. The objective is to ensure that no eligible voter is left out of the electoral roll.
Existing voters whose details are already correct generally do not need to take any immediate action. However, they are encouraged to verify their information during the exercise. Voters can also complete the verification process online instead of waiting for a BLO to visit their residence.

The ECI has clarified that voters are not required to produce details from previous electoral rolls if they do not remember them. Those whose names were not included during the last revision, newly married individuals, first-time voters, or people whose parents were never registered can also enrol by providing their current eligibility details.
The Special Intensive Revision aims to eliminate duplicate and inaccurate entries while ensuring that all eligible citizens are included in the voter list. Officials have urged residents to cooperate with the verification process and ensure their electoral details are accurate to facilitate a transparent and updated voter database.
