ECI announces Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council Election schedule; polling on June 18

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Monday announced the schedule for elections to 27 seats in the Rajya Sabha and various state legislative councils, with polling set to take place on June 18.
According to the poll schedule, the nomination process begins on June 1, while candidates can file their nominations until June 8. Scrutiny of nomination papers will be conducted on June 9, and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is June 11.
Voting for all the seats will be held on June 18 between 8 am and 4 pm, followed by counting of votes from 5 pm onwards on the same day.
The elections include biennial polls for 24 Rajya Sabha seats across 10 states. In addition, by-elections will be conducted for Rajya Sabha vacancies in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
The ECI also announced elections for legislative council seats in multiple states. Bihar will witness biennial elections for nine Legislative Council seats along with a by-election for one seat. In Karnataka, elections will be held for seven seats in the Legislative Council.
The upcoming elections are important for determining the composition of the Upper House of Parliament and state legislative councils, where members are elected indirectly by elected representatives and designated electoral colleges.
