Doctor held for maid’s murder in Capital

A 45-year-old domestic worker was allegedly bludgeoned with a cricket bat and stabbed to death by a dermatologist at his residence in Delhi’s upscale Greater Kailash area on Thursday. The accused, Dr Manish Gupta, was arrested on the spot and reportedly admitted to the killing during preliminary questioning.
The victim, Meena, had been working as a domestic help at Gupta’s residence for nearly 15 years. Her body was found lying in a pool of blood on the terrace of a neighbouring building. The body allegedly showed multiple signs of injury. Gupta was present near the body when the police arrived, officials said. The bat and knife allegedly used in the murder were recovered from the scene.
A senior police officer told The Pioneer that Gupta has a history of mental health issues and had been taking medication for a prolonged period. Investigators are expected to speak with his treating doctor to ascertain whether his mental health condition played any role in the incident.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East) Hemant Tiwari said the motive behind the murder remains unclear and that investigators are examining all possible angles. Sources told The Pioneer that Gupta kept changing his statement.
“The investigation is being conducted from all possible angles. We are also speaking to neighbours to determine whether there was any history of violence or disputes within the household,” the officer said.
Police sources said Gupta’s wife was not at home when the incident occurred, though his son was present.
CCTV footage from nearby buildings is being examined, while forensic teams have collected evidence from the crime scene.
The victim’s family expressed shock over the incident and said they had never heard of any mistreatment by the employer’s family. Sources noted that Meena often spoke positively about the Gupta household, saying they treated her well. They also claimed that she was paid adequately and had never complained about her employers.
“I don’t know what exactly happened. She was fine when she left. Someone called me and said she had died,” Robin, Meena’s son said.
The murder triggered anger among residents and domestic workers in the area. As news of the killing spread, a large crowd gathered outside the building. Several women broke down in tears and demanded strict action against the accused.
Police personnel remained deployed in the area to maintain law and order as forensic experts continued their examination of the scene. The body has been sent for postmortem, and further investigation is underway. According to the police, a case has been registered under relevant sections of the BNS.
