Delhi tightens security after bomb threat emails

Delhi was placed on high alert Friday after bomb threat emails were sent to major locations, such as Indira Gandhi International Airport, the Delhi High Court, and several Government

buildings. The threats came just a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled Independence Day speech at the Red Fort.

According to officials, the emails arrived around 11:30 AM, claimed that IEDs had been planted at key sites, and demanded the release of unnamed prisoners. At least three central government offices got similar messages. No explosives were found in the initial searches. However, the timing of these threats has made security agencies more cautious.

Earlier intelligence reports had warned about possible disruption attempts by hostile groups before Independence Day celebrations and the rehearsal at the Red Fort on Friday. A senior Delhi Police officer said these threats follow a pattern seen every year before August 15, with hoax messages meant to test response times and create public fear. Security agencies said they are taking all threats seriously.

Security measures have been raised to the highest level. Security has been tightened at the airport, court complexes, Metro stations, and all Independence Day event sites.

NSG commandos, bomb squads, and dog units are now stationed at Terminals 1, 2, and 3 of IGI Airport. Baggage and cargo are being thoroughly checked. At the Delhi High Court, lawyers and visitors were evacuated for about 90 minutes while police and fire services searched the building. Court sessions resumed once officials confirmed that nothing suspicious was found.
