Delhi Police refute claims of gunshot injury to woman protester
Delhi Police on Wednesday dismissed social media claims that a woman protester sustained a gunshot injury during the July 20 protest in central Delhi, saying her official medico-legal certificate (MLC) does not support the allegation.
In a statement, the police said the MLC prepared at Dr Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital on the day of the protest records a lacerated wound in front of the right tragus, with the nature of the injury described as blunt. According to the doctor’s opinion, the injury was simple and there was no evidence of a gunshot wound.
“The claim of gunshot injury is not supported by the medical findings on the MLC,” the statement said, urging the public to verify information through authentic sources before sharing such claims on social media.
Police said the woman visited RML Hospital on July 20, where doctors examined her and prepared the MLC. The official medical document, they said, recorded only a blunt-force injury and made no mention of any firearm-related wound.
Explaining the document’s significance, a senior police officer said an MLC is a medico-legal certificate prepared by doctors and shared with the police, forming the basis for further legal action in criminal cases. Police sources further claimed that after leaving RML Hospital, the woman approached a private hospital in Gurugram, where another medical document was prepared.
Describing the allegations circulating online as “baseless,” Delhi Police maintained that the original MLC from RML Hospital clearly documented a simple blunt injury near the woman’s right ear and did not indicate any gunshot injury.
